What is a lead acid battery?

A wet lead acid deep cycle leisure battery is a type of rechargeable battery that is designed for deep discharge applications and is commonly used in recreational vehicles (RVs), marine vessels, and off-grid power systems. Here's a breakdown of the key terms: 

• Wet lead acid: This refers to the type of battery chemistry, which uses lead and lead dioxide plates immersed in a sulfuric acid electrolyte solution. These batteries are known for their relatively low cost and ability to deliver high currents. 
• Deep cycle: Deep cycle batteries are designed to be deeply discharged (typically up to 80% of their capacity) and recharged repeatedly without significant degradation. This is in contrast to starter batteries, which are designed for short bursts of high current (e.g., starting a car engine) but cannot handle deep discharge cycles. 
• Leisure battery: The term "leisure" refers to the intended use of these batteries in recreational applications, such as powering appliances, lighting, and other electrical systems in RVs, boats, and off-grid cabins or homes. 

Wet lead acid deep cycle leisure batteries are known for their durability, low self-discharge rate, and ability to withstand numerous charge/discharge cycles. They are typically larger and heavier than starter batteries and unless sealed require proper maintenance, such as topping up with distilled water and periodically equalizing the charge across the cells. These batteries are well-suited for applications where a reliable and long-lasting power source is required, and where the weight and size constraints are not as critical as in automotive or portable applications.
